SUMMER PROGRAM IN FLORENCE, ITALY

The study abroad summer program in Florence, Italy organized by New College and the Creative Writing Program in the English department, gives students the opportunity to enjoy Summer Session I in Florence and earn up to seven Hofstra University credits.

Students also have the possibility to take the two three-credit classes as honor option courses for which they will receive Hofstra University Honors College credits. Students will spend the first week at HofstraÇs campus in an orientation, which will introduce the country, culture and courses followed by four weeks (all of June) in Florence.

The program will be based at CLIDA, the Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri, Italy's oldest private language school. Classes will be held in CLIDA's beautiful 19th century building with 16 large and fully equipped classrooms facing the Piazza della Repubblica, the heart of the city's historic center. In addition to classes, the program will include visits to the major museums in Florence, excursions to nearby cities, a cultural activity series (ballet, concert, or opera) and two cooking classes. The School in Piazza della Repubblica has Internet access and audiovisual equipment available.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

  • The Brownings in Italy (3 s.h)
    The romantic story of the love and work of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning is partially set in Florence, Italy where they lived and wrote for sixteen years after fleeing England. Professor Julia Markus, Browning scholar and Director of the Creative Program at Hofstra University, will recreate the Florence of the Browning's poetry, enabling participants to see the city through their eyes and experience. This course will also explore the Tuscan towns of the region as well as Venice, which played such a significant role in the couple's life and poetry. The major course requirement will be a weekly journal and several dramatic monologues to be presented to the class.

  • Renaissance in Italy: An Intellectual Journey (3 s.h.)
    This course taught by Political Science Professor Linda Longmire and Philosophy Professor John Teehan will investigate the philosophical, political, religious and artistic ideas which constitute the Renaissance. The class will examine the cultures and contexts which nurtured this pivotal historical moment between the medieval and the modern. In addition to the texts, the course will explore the museums, galleries and relevant locations in and around Florence, Rome and Venice in order to understand how these Renaissance ideas were expressed in the art and architecture of Italy. Course requirements will include journal and essay writing.

  • Italian with CLIDA
    An optional one credit Italian language course can be taken with CLIDA.

HOUSING: Double room in shared apartment.

DURATION OF PROGRAM: Summer Session I.

COSTS: $2,800 plus tuition. The $2,800 fee covers round trip airfare, transfer from Florence Airport, housing, four lunches per week for four weeks, farewell banquet and a few other special events.

HOLIDAY DIALYSIS PROGRAM

Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri in conjunction with Holiday Dialysis Institute (HDI) will begin in 2002 offering Italian Language Courses for Holiday Dialysis Patients in Florence and in Rome. A wide variety of courses in Italian will be offered for groups or single students.

Examples of the courses that will be offered are:

  • History of Art
  • Geography of Italy
  • Cooking
  • Design
  • Survival Italian and
  • Business Courses.

There is a mandatory 3 week advance booking for patients cooking, survival Italian and art design courses. And only one week advance booking is needed for business courses which can be personalized one to one.

Wine Course

Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri introduces a 3-hour, fun-filled, interactive course on Wines of Italy for all levels.

Learn from an expert the history of Tuscan Red and White Wines as well as learn how to match wine with food! All classes are accompanied by an assortment of Tuscan cheeses, or Tuscan crostini or Italian pastries!!

Choose to pay per lesson or for an entire course.

  • 150 Euro per student for course (4 lessons) (save 50 euro when you take all four lessons)

Duties for this hands-on internship include: assisting directors and marketing staff members in developing a comprehensive internet marketing plan; coordinating internet promotional mailings from conception through distribution; writing; data analysis and collection; internet service evaluation and development; and internet market research.
